Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, usually known by its acronym THCa, is one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, it's completely non-intoxicating in its raw state... but once THCa is decarboxylated (or, put simply, heated, such as by smoking), it becomes THC! That's where it gets its title as the "precursor to THC".
Fun fact: raw THCa can also be safely consumed! Research is ongoing to discover what effects raw THCa can have on the body, but without decarboxylation it certainly can't cause any psychoactive effects.
Heated THCa products can provide a classic high in addition to a wide variety of pleasant feelings, depending on the strain.
